Teaching Spanish culture to first through fifth graders in a public school in rural Michigan isn't an easy task. I am the only elementary Spanish teacher in the district so I see over 900 students a week. Almost all of my students are monolingual, Caucasian children who have never traveled beyond the borders of the USA. It is vitally important that these children learn about the cultural diversity in the world (and in our own country).

So many of my students believe that all Spanish speaking people are like the migrant workers they see in town. I want them to understand that each of the 21 Spanish speaking countries is very diverse and each has its own culture, traditions, and way of life. Not everyone who speaks Spanish eats tacos and it is important that I dispell the stereotypes of Spanish speaking people.

The 41 books that I have chosen will help the students to learn about each of the Spanish speaking countries. I have picked out books that not only tell about the geography and the people of the countries, but also tell the stories of the artists, writers, poets, singers, bullfighters, etc. of each of the countries. The stories are full of pictures that will bring each of the countries to life.

You will make it possible for my students to open their eyes and see that there is a world outside of western Michigan.
