A makerspace is in the works at Mondovi Elementary, a K-5 building with awesome staff and students. We are in the process of creating space for students to come and tinker. Adding Little Bits will help introduce circuitry and build creativity - students are ready to be challenged!
I will begin our Makerspace with 3rd through 5th graders.
Students need to be engaged, active and creating. Introducing Little Bits to the students will make it an exciting place to come to invent and be creative. We will build on the coding we've started and give students the opportunities to wonder, create, imagine, and design. We are immersed in the Common Core standards and assessing and management, but we also have a responsibility of providing opportunities for thinking and creating (designing and engineering, using science, math, technology, art, and critical thinking). Students need to be presented with these opportunities that will challenge them in ways that worksheets cannot. Please consider giving our students the necessary Little Bits to provide a way to investigate and play.
My Project
I will begin to work with small groups of students. Students will have the opportunity to attend Maker sessions at times of the day when they are not in core classes. This may mean recess time. It could be after school. I will work with other teachers to coordinate student availability.
Students will be able to play, create, redesign, and share what they have learned and created with littleBits - Electronics Deluxe Kit. Students will work together. Math and science concepts will be developed and reinforced. Most of all, I hope to create a culture of imagination and invention, developing skills that are needed in the future.
The funding will provide a tangible, fun resource for our students in the elementary school.
Students will learn to think "outside the box" and realize that everything that they have or work with was invented by someone. I want students to be excited to come to school and to realize that they have the power to change the world!
