"I teach second and third graders in a multiage classroom. Our theme this year is North American Forests, and everything we teach ties into that theme. Students are learning to identify trees, insects, and animals, the life cycles of trees and animals, and how each living thing has an effect on its habitat.
My students learn best through hands-on experiments and investigations, and they become so enthusiastic about learning when provided with the opportunity to fully experience a topic. We will soon begin learning about death and decay in the forest and its relationship to new life. I would like to give my students the opportunity to observe this process actually happen in our classroom. Nasco science offers a Forest Floor Study Kit that allows students to experience a part of the life cycle that is normally hidden or overlooked. It includes a partially decayed log, plants, insects, worms, and materials to conduct investigations related to decay, such as magnifying lenses, and pH test paper.
My students would greatly benefit from observing the decay process. It teaches them that death in the forest is not necessarily a negative thing and all organisms play an important role in maintaining the habitat. This project directly addresses the core life science standards for our grade level, and will bring a new understanding of forest life cycles to my students. Please help bring this fun and important project to our school! Thank you! The cost of this proposal is $156, including shipping and fulfillment. HIDELive Updates
