How Did They Do That? Bringing Viking Art Alive!

Mrs. E. Slippery Rock High School
Slippery Rock, PA Grades 9-12

I teach at a high school in rural Pennsylvania. I have a mix of students from ninth to twelfth grade in my room. One of the classes that I teach is called "How did they do that?" In the class I try to make history come alive through art. My high school students are so used to instant gratification that they don't normally think about the process it takes to make things from scratch. It is really eye-opening to them to think about how you make a piece of work with raw materials and creativity.

In my high school art room, we want to know how the Viking artists worked and try to create the artwork with the same methods they employed nearly 1000 years ago. By trying to use the same methods as the ancient artist we have to have the resources to find out just how they did work. For that we need books to let do the research to discover just what tools and techniques were used by the Vikings. After that, we need to try to make what we need if we are unable to buy the tools. The students really like to find out about the way that people lived. We spend the whole year studying the time period and culminate it with a Viking Day. The goal is to recreate a Norse pottery kiln, glass bead furnace and bronze furnace. It takes a lot of prep and scrounging around to get everything we need.

We are looking for books for the research, some casting equipment that we can use for the bronze and some glass for our Viking trade beads. By actually doing the projects with the same materials as the original craftsman, instead of heading out to the store to buy them, gives the students a lot more appreciation for the artists working 1000 years ago.

By contributing to the project, my students will gain knowledge not just through lecture or reading but by actually experiencing the work. They will get tired pumping the bellows, they will dig the pit and tend the fire to bake the pots and they will feel the scorching heat it takes to melt glass. This is the ultimate hands on experience for them!
