Could you imagine being in a classroom without any books? How could you practice and enjoy reading when you don't have any material that you are interested in? This is a problem that my students face every day. I teach sixth grade at a charter school in Pennsylvania. Most of my students come from low-income families and they cannot afford to buy their own books. Many of my students do not even have a mode of transportation to get to the public library.

Unfortunately, our school does not have a library of it's own, so any of the books that the students read for enjoyment come from their homeroom teachers. We are required to have silent reading every day, but we don't even have enough books for each student to use.

My students and I have come up with a list of books from popular authors that they are interested in. Some of the authors they have chosen are Jerry Spinelli who wrote Maniac Magee; Lois Lowry who wrote The Giver; Shel Silverstein who is a wonderful poet and wrote Where the Sidewalk Ends; and J.K. Rowling who we all know wrote the Harry Potter series. My students do enjoy to read, but they need a selection of different stories. All I need for this project are books. My students will not only enjoy them, but their reading and writing will improve with each book they finish.

I really hope that my students will be able to gain knowledge and entertainment through your generosity. We have little resources and I would like to give my students every chance at the best education possible. Please help me to provide my students with excellent books that will inspire them to read and write more.
