Podcasting for the Promulgation of People's Pedigrees

My students need a digital camera to create podcasts for their Wikispaces web page.

Hello! I'm an 11th grade world cultures teacher in a small, rural Pennsylvania school district. My school is in a unique situation in that we are not poor enough to qualify for state and federal grant money yet are not wealthy enough to support a growing technology program. As a result, the school district has little in the way of technology for the students to use to enrich their learning experience. There are many school districts from poorer communities who have much better technology as a result. Also, many of the students in our district do not have access to technology at home, which we are finding severely limits our ability to assign work using the web.

The district does have several computer labs and I am trying my best to integrate into the world cultures curriculum. The students are now producing excellent work the Wiki Spaces website. I'd like to take the students to the next level and introduce them to podcasting. They will then be able to share their efforts with other students. If they believe that their efforts will have a ripple effect on other students around the nation and even the world, they will take ownership of their education and produce work that is goes way beyond the typical school project.

In the future, each student could certainly benefit from a laptop computer that could be signed out for use at home. For now, I'm requesting a digital camera that can be used to create podcasts. Because of the cellphone and internet, computer and technological communication has become the norm for most teenagers. They find traditional classwork to be low tech and therefore have a hard time seeing the benefits of pen and paper work. The camera will enable the student to use technology, along with internet access to research and share their thoughts and work with other students on a global basis.

What better way to encourage your students to become more informed than to share their knowledge of history and culture with students from other cultures. Podcasting and blogging on the internet will allow the students to communicate their thoughts and ideas to who actually live out the culture that we can only read about in our small, isolated classroom. Please help my rural students broaden their horizons by giving them the tools they need to communicate with the outside world.
