Why is it so important that children know their sight words? Over half of the words people encounter on a day-to-day basis are sight words. It is crucial that my first-graders are successful in reading, writing, and spelling sight words.
In my classroom, each day is an opportunity to learn and experience something new.
I work at a Title I school, which means more than 45% of our students receive free or reduced priced lunch; however, my students' passion for learning is contagious! I am so lucky to be a teacher who helps to spark my students' excitement for education, and influence the innovators of the future.
My students are eager to become better readers. According to the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, “Rapid recognition of sight words is a key foundation skill that supports the development of reading fluency.” Reading comprehension and confidence are also directly linked to sight word knowledge. In order to grow as a reader, my first grade students must master common sight words through frequent practice in literacy centers.
My Project
First-graders need to repeat reading of sight words to gain fluency. With the sight word magnets, students will have hands-on practice with identifying, reading, and writing sight words. Students will use groups of sight word magnets to write sentences, and to review alphabetical order. It is equally important that children can not only read, but spell sight words, because they are frequently used when writing. With the sight word puzzles, students will have hands-on practice spelling sight words, by building each word letter by letter. With the foam sight word stamps, students will stamp, trace, and write each sight word. This kinesthetic stamping approach reinforces correct spelling and letter formation, through easy-to-trace dotted impressions.
I am requesting a variety of hands-on word work center activities, including sight word stamps, sight word puzzles, and sight word magnets, for my first-grade students.
These materials will give students fun and engaging ways to master reading, writing, and spelling sight words.
