“It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge.” - Albert Einstein
My students are residents of a facility whose purpose is to get them back on their feet and on the right path.
They are court-ordered to come from all over the state. They work with teachers and counselors to get the education and rehabilitation that they need before they go back to their home school. They are good kids who have had a rough life early on, but they are eager to learn how to change their future.
My Project
I have asked for mostly consumable resources for electronic projects that the students could keep with them once their projects are complete. With the copper tape and LEDs we will make artwork that will light up. With the sensors, we will be able to activate the artwork only when someone is near. Along with some circuit boards that we already have, we will use the sensors, resistors and parts kit to learn how computers work, and how we can control them. We will play with robots that we built and programmed.
There is no greater joy for me as a teacher than to see a high school student excited about taking their project home to proudly show their family what they learned at school.
They are so amazed that technology is something that they can work with and not just use to update a status. In our state, we have yet to see the importance of this kind of education. I want students to spread the word that STEM education is important. They will begin to demand more of it, and that is my goal.
