"In an Illinois public school (grades K-5) with a minority population, out of 360 students, 122 auditioned for band, 91 auditioned for choir, and nearly 90% expressed interest in piano lessons. Due to limitations in space and resources, we could not accept them all. However, the overwhelming interest in music programs made us realize that we need to do more to give students opportunities to learn about and experience music.

My music friend/co-worker and I decided to co-teach our music classes this year; therefore, we see all of the students on stage at least once each week. We have 2 classrooms on the stage at once. Based on the extraordinary interest for music programs, we decided to be FAIR... and rework our curriculum to give ALL students an opportunity to sing and play instruments IN the music class. Our goal is to teach all students how to read music. The first step is teaching them to identify and comprehend music notes and symbols.

The "note-worthy" rugs will give us the medium through which we will teach all students to read music. Colorful music symbols border the rug, the black and white piano keys frame the rug, and the center of the rug is filled with a huge music staff. These rugs will help us reach and teach all learners. For example, visual learners will love the creative layout and visual support of the rug; kinesthetic learners will love sitting on the carpet, interacting with the symbols, and perhaps even "playing" the piano keys; regular education and special education students alike will love the routines that will start as a result of the rugs. I am eager for the learning communities that will be created as a result of the teaching and learning on the rugs! The rugs will also allow us to scaffold instruction for students in grades K-5 by using the rugs differently based on grade level and/or ability.

Your generosity will allow all 1,300 students to take the first step to becoming musicians: reading music. The "note-worthy" rugs will allow us to create communities of music learners while also providing support for students that are eager to read music.

The note-worthy music rugs are the perfect place to gather, sing, play instruments and provide the visual support necessary for teaching students to read music! We need two of these rugs. The cost of this proposal is $908, which includes shipping for any materials requested and fulfillment ?."

Mrs. A. sent this note after the project was fully funded:

Dear Patrick, Stefania, fineprint chicago, Chrissa, Lisa, Connolly, DonorsChoose.org and Anonymous Donor,

Tonight was 3rd Quarter Report Card Pick-Up. One parent told me, "The Music Program at this school has really grown and changed, thanks to you." After receiving notification from Donors Choose that my project was fully funded, I realize the music program will further grow and change, thanks to you !
I can't believe the students will now have the rugs: what a fun and creative place to sit while on stage in the auditorium! The arrangement lends itself perfectly to a drum circle. I am eager to teach the structure of the piano, often ignored in the curriculum, using the "piano" on the border of the rugs. But I am most excited to introduce and reinforce music symbols with the visual design on the rugs.
I am overwhelmed by your generosity, especially in these tough economic times. Thank you for valuing the arts and realizing the impact Music can have on children and adults alike.
I can't wait to tell my principal, my music friend with whom I co-teach, and (of course) my students; we will all be jumping for joy tomorrow! I promise you'll be glad you helped fund this Music project! Thank you again!

With gratitude,
Mrs. A.
