Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

"I want to read about REAL life!" This is the comment most often made by my high school Reading students looking for books to read. Most of my students come from low-income homes, where they have seen more "real-life" troubles than most adults I know. Reading about real life situations makes it easier for teenagers to handle the difficult situations they encounter in their own lives. Being able to relate to characters in books engages students and keeps them interested in reading. This proposal will bring copies of eight books for teenagers that deal with the real life situations teens are faced with everyday. Themes range from a teenage boy confronting his abusive father in "Breathing Underwater" to a young woman overcoming anorexia and bulimia in "Wasted." Such books allow students to confront difficult topics in a safe space and become educated on issues not often addressed in schools or homes. Having access to these "real- life" books will not only increase my students' reading levels, but will also increase their awareness of their world and offer them positive ways to handle the pressures of being a teenager. Thank you for helping me give my wonderful students the education they deserve!
