My Students

A typical day in my classroom is full of energy. My students get excited about reading and stories that captivate them. They ask questions about them and are talking about the stories we read in class days later.

My students are a group of 19 second grade students from Maryland.

While they love reading and get excited about stories, they also struggle reading on their own. Their reading levels right now are lower than they should be for second grade and my school is trying out new programs to help them improve their reading skills. My students love to read and will talk for days about Cinderella after we read about her in class. I catch them saying lines from the stories or relating the characters to their real lives. My students get excited and captivated by reading. When we are reading in class while they are on the carpet, they are craning their necks to see the pictures and can't wait to get to the next page.

My Project

A leveled reading library will allow my students to read books that are on their own reading level. When children can read books on their own level, they are best able to enhance their reading skills. Read a book too low and they are not challenged. Read a book too high and they are confused and give up. But when they can read a book on their own level, they not only can comprehend the story, but improve their reading and decoding skills at the same time. It is like the Goldilocks of reading. Their own level is just right. Once they practice reading books on their own level regularly, their reading levels will improve and they can catch up to where they should be in second grade.

By being able to read books on their own reading level, my students will be able to practice and hone their reading skills so that they can get better and better at reading.

They will love reading on their own and be excited to read. By having books available to them that they can understand, their love for reading and learning will grow along with their reading levels.
