Gyotaku--The Art of Japanese Fish Printing

My students need Gyotaku fish forms, brayers, a Gyotaku DVD, ink and paper to learn about Japanese culture and the traditional process of fish printing.

I teach at a high-need school on the West side of Chicago. Almost all of my students are on the free and reduced lunch program.

My students don't have much, and that is why I strive to give them the world. Many of the children will not have the opportunities to leave the neighborhood.

Part of my curriculum does just that, I teach many of my projects with an emphasis on cultural arts. By doing this, my students become learners of the world. They learn the culture of a country through hands on projects. I've noticed, many have taken an interest in Japanese culture. Even if this stems from Japanese comics, I want to take their interest and turn it into a teachable moment. With your help, I can do just that. I will show them Japanese culture and history through Gyotaku printing.

This is a project that would not be possible without outside support, and you are just the person to make a difference in the lives of many students.
