Learning Math is Fun and Games!

My students need a variety of math games and materials, including a games library, place value boards, play money, a math literature collection and a Learning Wrap-Ups Math Resource Kit.

Ms. Katzen Hughes Elementary School
Santa Clara, CA Grades 3-5

Hello! I am a 4th grade teacher at a low-performing school in the SF Bay Area, CA. We are a Title 1 school, which means that more than 50% of our children receive free or reduced-priced lunches because of financial need and low socioeconomic status. This has a huge impact on the kids' lives, meaning that many of them do not have basic school supplies. It also impacts the teachers, in that we receive very few school monies or donations from parents with which to purchase classroom supplies. I love math, and I truly believe that children who are well-educated in math will be able to succeed in our ever-evolving world. I have a deep passion for teaching, and will do whatever I can to make sure my students receive the richest and most rigorous education possible, despite their families' financial difficulties. Our work in math is year-long, and I want my students to have hands-on experiences with all the mathematical concepts we study. To do this, we need games! The few games available at our school are either old, broken, or missing pieces. There are not enough supplies to give my students (there are about 30 kids in all) the type of learning experience they need to have in order to fully comprehend the subject of math. It is for this reason that I am asking generous donors to contribute a variety of math-based games, materials and activities to our classroom. By contributing, you can give underprivileged students the chance to experience quality hands-on learning and learn the mathematical principles that will help them succeed later in life. My project needs enough hands-on math games and activities to extend the learning of 30+ students. I love math and honestly believe that math is the key to success. With budgets running at an all-time low and the push for student achievement at an all-time high, teachers face the unique challenge of elevating their students' skills and abilities with little to no extra resources. This leads to many children being left behind, especially those who are not yet working at a proficient level. Your donation will give my students the extra resources they need to narrow the achievement gap.
