Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our classroom is full of fun, enthusiastic, and eager 1st graders ready to learn! By the end of the school year, I would like to see my students reading confidently. "Today a reader, tomorrow a leader." - Margaret Fuller
The students in our class are eager and ready to learn every day.
Some are homeless, some are trying to find stability in the homes that they do have, and some have families that are very involved. No matter where they come from, they come to school ready to learn every morning.
Our school has a high poverty level, but we don't let that stop us from making it the best place for them to be every day. We are happy to be there, and love to see the smiles on their faces when they walk through the door to the place that they know will always be there for them.
My Project
With these materials, the students in our classroom will have better materials to help them learn to read. Nonfiction books help the students learn about real life things. These books will show them the difference between real and fantasy.
These books will be used for Guided Reading time. This is when the students are pulled back to read with me, in a small group, based on their reading ability. During this time we go through the books, talk about new words, and all the different strategies they will use while reading. As they read the books, I help them reinforce the reading strategies. When they are done reading, we talk about the books and what they have learned. There are many things they can learn from a single nonfiction book!
Many of the books we have in our classroom are Fiction.
Although the students enjoy reading them, they are very outdated and do not teach the students about real life things. Using nonfiction books also helps us learn about topics that we may not be able to cover in other subject areas throughout the year.
Learning to read is essential to a child's success in school!
