Mrs. Vaughn Greenwood Middle School
Greenwood, IN Grades 3-5

I teach 5th grade in a certified Title I school in Indiana. Our school is 44% free and reduced lunch. Our population is very transient, as we have a lot of students moving in and out.

Some years ago, I was given a Snap Circuit Set, courtesy of our gifted and talented program. All students (of all ability levels) loved this kit that allows them to independently create electric machines using a simple circuit system.

I need 5 Snap Circuit Kits and enough AA batteries so that students can repeatedly use this resource throughout the year. Ideally, I would put students into groups of four to work in teams with each kit weekly. I'd like student to build on their knowledge from week-to-week to create more challenging machines. The benefits to this type of learning are endless. First, students would be reading directions for purpose and for success. Also, I feel deeply that American students need to recapture the JOY of constructing objects. My students can do unbelievable things! They can email, text message, download, master all things electronic, but they are lacking the skills to building basic objects with their own hands. Above all, students need to have a way to experiment with trial and error, master logical reasoning, and find their own errors. Snap Circuits Kits demand student success in all these areas!

Your gift will give these students a chance to use their hands and minds to solve problems and construct machines with PRIDE.
