Ms. Gaul Phoenix Academy
Oxford, NC Grades 9-12

I teach high school biology and chemistry in an small, rural school. Many students come from low socio-economic backgrounds. Because we are in a poor, rural county there are very few funds for science besides the absolute basics. Our students need hands on, inquiry activities that relate to real world situations. This is how they learn best; not by just reading a textbook. I would like to engage my students by teaching topics such as DNA analysis, blood typing, anatomy and physiology, drugs, and toxins through the use of Forensics. By providing them with more real world activities, they will be able to raise their interest and ability levels in the biology and chemistry. My students love watching crime investigation shows on television such as CSI and Forensic Files. This will give them an opportunity to be "Crime Scene Investigators" to explore important scientific concepts. To make this project a reality I need a few Forensic books and resources for conducting blood typing, chromatography, drug and toxin testing and processing a crime scene. You can make this project possible for my students. I believe that my incorporating this exciting project into my curriculum my students knowledge and understanding of science will increase along with their interest. Thank you for making this possible.
