I have 12 Special Education students who are mentally retarded and severely handicapped. They are all confined to wheelchairs and all but 2 are non verbal. We are part of a Special Education school and are housed in a local community school.

The various handicaps of the students does not allow for normal mobility of arms and fingers. Holding a book is impossible, as is the ability to turn pages. This limits the joy of being close to a story and enjoying the simple delights of the written word or even turning a page. I am turning to "Little Jackie Paper", for help. He was the companion of Puff the Magic Dragon, and he brought him "strings and sealing wax and other fancy stuff".

The series of books that I have requested comes with a collection of related figures, masks, puppets and other "fancy stuff". A theater in a box will add to the understanding of the story and allow my students to get physically close to the characters and be able to see and touch the actual storyline.

My students learn by using a sensory approach. They are encouraged to use the senses that they have to explore the world around them. I feel that the addition of this set of books will open a world of literature that is sometimes lost on them.
