Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Every student deserves to feel confident, intelligent, and important in their classroom. Reading builds all of those traits in children and my goal is for every student to make a years + growth within the year. I start our day with "I have a challenge for you," and they respond with "bring it on!"
I work in an elementary school that is over 94% socioeconomically challenged in Solano County.
I have 30 smart, quirky, confident, kind-hearted, and hard working second graders. Over half of my students are English Learners. My school is a positive place for student engagement and learning. We work hard with what we are given and I have infused every penny I can to enrich my students' education. Unfortunately, it's just not enough. I have a print in my room that says "Defeat is not the worst of failures. Not to have tried is the true failure," by George Edward Woodberry.
My Project
With the reading books, I will be able to increase the number of books I use during small group instruction at each individual student's reading level. These books will help increase their reading comprehension, engagement, and fluency. Students will have the opportunity to share their connections to the different books, their opinions, and ideas, all within a small group setting at their ability level.
I will be able to use the nonfiction texts for both reading, science, and math.
We will have the opportunity to observe a butterflies metamorphosis. A text rich environment for my English learners will help increase their engagement, speaking, and comprehension. All students will have the opportunity to compare and contrast stories like Dogerella and Cinderella, and then write an opinion paper on which book they preferred and why. These books will positively impact my entire classroom.
