Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"What we learn, becomes a part of who we are."
My students have grown so much since 6th grade when they were first introduced to Malala. At the time they didn't know or realize they had any power to change the world. Through Malala they learned it was possible.
I want them to be productive people.
My students live in an encapsulated high crime, high poverty area of a large urban area.
Their daily life is home, school and home again. No extracurricular activities and not even being able to play outside after school for safety and security issues.
Their only global connection is the classroom. Our demographic is about 98% Hispanic-Latino in a small, 100 year old school that is very limited in resources.
Many students don't have transportation to go places, or even a working phone. No library is nearby so the students depend on the school for most of the information or learning they acquire.
We have really good students who want to learn about the world and how to succeed in it. They just need help to get there.
My Project
I would like to take my students to see "He Named Me Malala" so they can learn through 8th grade eyes what the 'power of one' really means.
We are currently learning about how individuals get power in societies, especially with repressive governments. This documentary would tie in beautifully with our unit and would enable my students to understand that even at this age, they can make a difference to the world now and in the future. After they see the documentary, I would like them to come up with a project that they can pursue as they transition into high school to help empower others.
My students' lives will be changed for the better because they have almost zero knowledge of what is happening in other places outside their neighborhood.
Especially given that this is a documentary about Malala, they could bring more background knowledge to our current unit of study on individuals in societies and try to relate their own experiences to that of Malala.
Seeing this documentary is a valuable resource to enrich their education and enhance their desire to learn.
