My classes are full of inspiring, motivated, and unique students who long for books that interest them. I want my students to want to pick up a book, and realize just how powerful reading can be! This is for a course Reading for Life, in which the goal is to build lifelong readers.
The student body I teach is very diverse, not only in age, but also in ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and interests.
This group of books would give all students the opportunity to have a love of reading/writing, and the excitement books can unlock for readers. The school is full of technology for resources and educators and students working together to succeed. We value collaboration and innovation to keep our school and classes running.
My Project
My students are required to have an independent book to read during class and report on at the end of the quarter. This is to get students talking about novels, and give them the chance to share great books with each other. These independent reading books are not chosen for them, rather they decide what they want to read about. My students have trouble picking a book because they are intimidated by many of the books classified as "classics." My students need the Orca series to be motivated to choose a book, be interested in it, and keep reading throughout the quarter!
The Orca series will make a difference to each of my students, as they are always looking for something new to grab their attention.
My students come from very different economical backgrounds and do not have access to the vast amount of experiences available for young minds. The Orca series is the key to showing that reading can be fun, and is a way to experience and learn what we cannot teach in school. The Orca series teaches lifelong readers, lifelong lessons by allowing them to experience.
