My students need the Lego education kit, the Lego boards, extra Lego pieces, and the two raspberry pi kits to stimulate to create, invent, tinker, explore and discover.
A maker space is a place where students can gather to create, invent, tinker, explore and discover using a variety of tools and materials. These tools promote learning through play and experimentation, and they’re cross-disciplinary, with elements of art, science and craftsmanship. We need this!
Our students lack opportunities for creativity mainly due to limited resources available to their rural, low- income community.
With a 67% free and reduced lunch population, our students could benefit from this type of project. Our students are hard-working, eager to learn, inquisitive, and would love to experiment with this type of creative space. The high school is small with about 400 9-12th graders located in the shadows of the Appalachian Mountains.
My Project
Picture the library wall covered with a Lego backdrop and a basket full of creative blocks-all sizes, shapes, colors. Now the students are at the wall designing; creating their own interpretation of an academic concept learned that day. This interactive space engages students in innovation and creation sparking enthusiasm and interest in other students who pass the wall. In addition, the Raspberry Pi hands-on technology kit will in turn spark the attention of students who prefer hands on engineering concepts. These two resources will change for the better the way the library is utilized.
The Lego wall and Raspberry Pi innovative projects will produce many expressions of learning.
In order to complement academic concepts these two maker spaces will provide the catalyst for integrated learning. The library will become an active hands-on learning space in addition to its traditional literacy space.
This type of learning environment meets the need of our students who lack hands-on resources. Research states that hands-on learning produces a deeper, long lasting memory retention.
