Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

IN THE STICKS. I am the Title 1 Language Arts teacher for 3rd, 4th and 5th graders. Our school is located in rural Texas with many economic and educational needs. Many of our students receive free or reduced lunches and a large percentage of our population has limited English language skills.

VISUALIZE.... You are in desperate need of your daily caffeine. No problem, a favorite coffee bar is just around the corner. As you enter, you can smell the aroma of perfectly roasted beans mixed with a touch of homemade bakery goodness. Your mouth begins to water and your body tingles with anticipation (and probably caffeine addiction). The barrister motions for you to step forward; it is your turn. You place your order and wait for your total. Instead of the usual "That will be $3.85," you are told, "I am sorry but we have no coffee machines today. We are unable to brew a single cup of coffee even though we have just roasted the beans, set out the creamers, and have a abundance of flaky pastries." If this sounds like your worst nightmare, consider this. My students experience this same frustration daily, due to lack of simple technology. Earlier in the year we were the very thankful recipients of 19 audio books. Students were so excited to check out the CDs and be transported to wonderful new worlds. Our Library Goddess was delighted by the line of children checking out the new CDs and/or cassettes.

HOUSTON, WE HAVE A PROBLEM! Seconds after the first book was scanned a student asked to check out a CD player. The school certainly didn't have portable CD players, and there was no funding for such items. I was so desperate to put good literature into the hands of students, I borrowed my own children's CD players to lend to students. To add to the problem, I continually provide batteries for the students since most do not have money to purchase replacements. This is like putting band-aid on a leaking pipe. It is not making a difference. I am saddened when I hear a student unable to experience quality books read by captivating authors because we cannot provide portable electronic devices.

ENRICH READING WITH LOW TECH DEVICES. You can bring books to life for hundreds of students by funding this proposal. Remember the joy of hearing a great book read to you by your mom or dad? Pass that experience on to others with your donation of CD and Cassette players; along with rechargeable batteries. Think of what a difference simple technology makes the next time you enjoy your coffee and realize your donation just made a difference to many students!
