I greet every class with a smile on my face because I am reflecting the smile on theirs. My students love coming to art class. We have so much fun and create wonderful, meaningful works of art as we learn about different cultures, time periods and people.
I teach art to 800 elementary students in a public elementary school in the suburbs of Atlanta, Georgia.
My students come with a variety of personal, cultural and technological backgrounds. There is a wide range of art knowledge that arrives with my students as they enter each year. Some students work on art at home while others have never explored any of the art mediums.
My Project
We are in need of the more basic art supplies. We need tempera cakes and brushes to paint. Painting is a medium I try to incorporate into every grade at least three times a year. Other than the desired tempera cakes, we do have liquid tempera and watercolor we use.
My dad use to tell me, "You're only as good as your tools." For painting, the tool would be the paint brush and we are in dire need of new paintbrushes. We also really need a pencil sharpener that works. We draw, sketch, plan and create art with a multitude of materials, but we usually start with pencils. A pencil sharpener that works will help us to save time trying to use sharpeners that don't work and eat up the pencils.
The art reproductions will help me to incorporate art history into each lesson. I use a screen to show images, but having a real poster-sized work of art is great for the students to study.
“Logic will get you from A to B.
Imagination will take you everywhere.” –Albert Einstein
These tools will help my students delve into the painting medium as they also explore and learn more about their imagination. It is rare to find time in a young child's life for true exploration. My art class, while structured and planned, allows this break for the students to uninhibitedly dig into, examine, and test their unique creative abilities.
