Finding reading material that will truly interest and excite children is often a difficult task. As a third grade teacher, I often see students choose to not read simply because they have not found books that are at their reading level and that interest them. Children need books that motivate them to read more. When historical information is entwined in the books, students can learn about an historical event and enjoy reading at the same time.

Our school focuses on six different thematic units throughout the year. One theme focuses on America and it is during this theme that we learn about our country, its history, and its government. My classroom would benefit greatly with the addition of more books that will help describe life during different time periods in American history.

In order to better teach about life in America during those different times, my students can use two different sets of novels that can be used during literature circles. The first book is "Little House in the Big Woods" which describes life for a pioneer family. By reading this book, my students will get to learn about life for the pioneers settling the Midwest, through the eyes of a child like them. Another book that will benefit my class is "Ben and Me," which will give the class an idea of life during colonial times and give them more information about the life of one of our founding fathers. We can then take this information we learn to find out more about our Constitution and other founding fathers.

Your help will ensure that my students are exposed to the history of the United States through literature. You will help give my students the opportunity to read about their country in books that are at their reading levels.
