Help us revolutionize an historic advertisement project from paper presentations to digitized commercials. My school community is a diverse, high-needs one with a significant special education population, and committed teachers interested in producing assignments that motivate and challenge our students to take charge of their learning beyond the required content. An upcoming Global History Project (designed my the 9th grade teacher and myself, the librarian) will involve students creating historic political advertisements about issues facing the West during the Enlightenment time period: The role of women, political self-determination, free speech, religious tolerance, etc. The teacher wants the project to emphasize the benefits of teamwork, have students form a personal connection between the historic content and their own lives, and educate their peers about these timeless issues in a dynamic way.

The purchase of digital camcorders for our school would transform the project from in-class presentations with poster boards, to student produced and edited commercials projected onto the big screen.

We anticipate this digital project would increase student attendance, engagement, and understanding of the academic content for several reasons: The multiple roles and tasks of the project to keep them challenged, the competitive element of showcasing their work, the responsibility to their teammates, and the personal stake involved in creating a project that is all their own. Students would watch current television commercials that would model and inspire how their ads should be. They would choose an issue that they were passionate about and assign themselves the various roles of this digital project geared towards their strengths and interests: Actors, camera operators, editors, interviewers, narrators, and researchers. The teacher would critique each plan so students could revise it before putting it into action. The librarian would direct students on how to use the camcorders, editing technology, and facilitate effective research practices. Students would film, edit, and then finalize the project by publicly introducing it to their classmates and invited guests.

This assignment would require students to use critical thinking and technology skills to synthesize their research and knowledge—needed expertise to succeed in today’s global economy. The addition of digital technology would take it to the next level.
