Extremely high-need students in need of extremely-high art! My "babies" are a passionate crew of about 500 inner-city children, ranging from ages 5 to 12. Our state of South Carolina is soaked in the arts, but these kids have almost no exposure to art outside of the art room.

We are at 99.9 percent poverty in our school. Before my kids even step through my door, they've faced challenges I could not imagine. Many of them care for their younger siblings and have a hard time just " being a kid". Across the board, they have expressed a strong interest in photography and videography. They are visual learners, and love learning about cameras and looking at my photos. Of my 500 students, only one that I've spoken to has access to a camera at home. I know the power of art and photography, and I can see the potential in these kids. The obstacle is simply resources.

I want the children to experience the power of capturing your everyday world through photography. The everyday things that they may see as gritty and painful could be looked at with new eyes through art. I want them to really see their world. I'm starting with three digital cameras and a photo printer. Five hundred cameras would be perfect, but...baby steps. I'd like to have students work in teams to capture their world and then create a book about it. There is a feeling of powerlessness in these kids. They can't control their home lives, their economic status, etc. But they CAN control how they look at their world.

You will make it possible for my students to express themselves in a strong and viable skill. There is a feeling of powerlessness in these kids. There is hope in the idea that you can change your world by simply changing your viewpoint.
