Stepping Up to College: AVID Academy!

My students need AVID academy materials for a "before the start of school" camp such as binders, pencils, highlighters, notebook paper, and gameballs to have a day that celebrates their achievement of being accepted into AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination).

Grades 6-8

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a special program for "at risk," typically minority students. It is a college preparation course for grades 7 and 8 that helps them to learn those special skills that will help them to be the first in their families to attend college. Being accepted into the AVID program means honors classes, difficult course work and life-changing adventures for our AVID students. Hosting a one day Pre-AVID academy with team-building activities and by providing materials that they will need for a successful year will be sure to get my students off to a good start. My students are "at risk" only by technical classification. They only need love, encouragement and all the right materials to get their school life off on the right foot. The Pre-AVID Academy materials and family activities can make sure that that happens for my students. AVID is all about college! At the center of my 7th and 8th grade AVID classroom is the organized AVID binder - which helps students get and stay organized. Organization is critical for their success. However, many of our students are unable to purchase a quality binder and supplies for school. That is why the resources for the AVID Academy are so necessary. AVID is a classroom that is really an at school, ready-made family for our students. Success in AVID means meeting exciting, rigorous challenges and asks a lot of students who might not be considered as candidates for this challenge. We would love to be able to hand all of these students a binder equipped with paper - engage them in team-building activities, and get their AVID year off to a great start. If you have ever had a personal challenge and met it head on, then you know the wonderful heartfelt confidence it can give you. When you place a binder in the hands of an AVID student and give them the opportunity to learn about and understand the challenges they are going to face in their AVID class you give them a "step up" into college life. Sometimes a teacher's love is not enough. Please help my students by providing them with the binders, supplies and T-Shirts we need to hold our first annual "AVID Academy!" Being a part of AVID is a cause to celebrate. Help be a part of this celebration
