Mrs. B. Arcadia Valley High School
Ironton, MO Grades 9-12

Welcome to my Honors English 4 classroom! Here the brightest seniors in our small, rural, low-income school are challenged to meet my high expectations--and I am AMAZED daily as they work hard to impress me!

It's no surprise. We live in a world where technology is evolving and increasing exponentially. Because of this rapid growth and change, teachers are preparing students for jobs THAT DON'T EVEN EXIST YET! But . . . we are educating them in the same way their grandparents were educated--books, paper, pencils. My students' world is not the same world as it was generations ago, and my students' learning styles are not the same as student learning styles were generations ago. Because they are being raised in the techno-age, students are highly visual and interactive. Yet, teachers often fail to recognize students' new learning styles or give students opportunities to utilize the technology they have been raised on . . . those same learning styles and technologies that society demands people must utilize not only to survive but to thrive in the workplace.

I am making an effort to bring my classroom into the 21st century without abandoning traditional strategies that still serve my students. As we finished our last literature unit, my students wrote traditional literary analysis essays (quite well, I might add). However, at the end of the current literature unit (George Orwell's 1984), I would like students to demonstrate their literary analysis skills by using technology. Students will use Windows Movie Maker (available at school) to create a movie trailer to promote an imaginary movie version of the novel 1984. Students will use digital cameras to video and to take still pictures that represent important scenes, themes, characters, and conflicts in the novel. Card readers will allow students to transfer video/pictures to Movie Maker. Students will then create movie trailers with music, voice-over narration, text, and a variety of special effects. Movie Maker produces professional-looking video that the students are going to love! Only four of my students have used Movie Maker, so I am excited to introduce them to new technology that they will be able to use for projects in college and/or in the workplace.

I am SO excited about introducing this project to my seniors. Not only am I certain they will be motivated by the activity, but I am pleased to offer them this opportunity to use their visual and interactive learning styles in my classroom, as well as expose them to new technology. Without digital cameras compatible with Movie Maker, card readers to transfer data, and flash drives to save the movie trailers, this project will not be possible. Thank you so much for helping me prepare my students for all those jobs that do not even exist yet!
