My students need special sand for our sand table.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Every day we have math and literacy centers. I tried very hard to make these activities fun, age appropriate and educational.
My students love to play, explore, and learn and I want my students to get the most out of our center time.
My students love center time so much that if we miss it, they ask why. Some students even choose to stay in from recess to have center time.
We currently have a new wonderful sand table but it doesn't have any sand in it. We have alphabet and number molds to use with the sand as well as other open ended materials. I would like to add sand to our table so the students can explore and learn from sand play during our literacy and math centers. Not only will the students practice the letters and numbers at the sand center, they will strengthen their finer motor muscles, they will practice their social skills, and they will enhance their cognitive development through exploration and trial and error. During play time they can use the sand table to explore other mathematical concepts like more and less, capacity, and weight. With the open ended tools we have, the students will be able to develop and enhance their artistic expression.
With the addition of sand to our sand table, I hope to create a learning environment where the students are able to learn while having fun.
Academics are important and I intend to use the sand for number and alphabet recognition and formation, however, the sand table will also allow students to build other important skills like physical, cognitive, and social development as well as artistic expression.
