My students need 60 novels (two classroom sets of books: Uglies and Unwind) to improve literacy and fluency as we read the novels together in class, discussing social issues through lit groups.
While the traditional basil is fine, it does not reach out to students the way a novel does. When they have the actual, modern, and relevant book in front of them, they are going to enjoy reading it more and get more out of it.
My students range in reading ability.
Some are very gifted, while other struggle. However, when they enter my classroom, they know they will work together to help everyone in the class grow as stronger readers. This is why reading together works well with them. They are a great group of students. Our town is a small, but close community. Many students come from homes without TV or Internet access.
My Project
My students will use the materials to analyze the literature in class together. They will first work on reading the two novels. Then, they will break into groups to discuss thoughts and feelings about what they are reading, not only helping them comprehend the storyline, but understand the meanings and themes the stories have. There will also be a great deal of classroom discussion about the novels that will lead into further independent research on topics discussed in the two novels.
This project will make a difference and improve my classroom by giving us novels to read and discuss together.
There are stories in their textbooks that we read together, but these are only 2-10 pages long. By giving students a complete novel, not only are they getting the whole story, but they are also understanding what it is like to complete a whole novel and critically analyze it as they read.
