Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Every morning I make sure to greet each of my students by name, and I teach them to greet me in the same manner. This is the first strategy I use to create a warm and inviting environment where my students feel special and important. Our first-morning greetings set a positive tone for daily learning.
I teach first grade in a Title 1 primary school, just outside of Washington, DC.
Most of my students are English language learners, and receive free or reduced-price lunch due to the economic hardships their parents face on a daily basis. My students love to learn, despite the struggles they may experience from sources outside of school. They work very hard to do their best and often ask for extra classwork and homework so that they can "make their brains stronger". Anyone who visits our school can testify by observing the smiles on the students' faces that they love where they are learning.
My Project
My students especially enjoy coming to a visually-appealing classroom, where vibrant colors and comfortable places to learn motivate them to do their best. Having a spacious, colorful classroom carpet will definitely contribute to providing their classroom with the characteristics they look forward to seeing daily in their learning environment. In addition, it offers the students a great place to gather for morning meetings, listen to a teacher read-aloud, as well as participate in small- and whole-group lessons/activities.
I can imagine my students' eyes lighting up with excitement the first time they see their amazingly colorful, soft, and roomy classroom carpet!
The carpet is often the hub of learning and fun in the classroom. It is also the first place my students gravitate towards when they choose a book to read independently or with a friend. The classroom carpet offers a special and comfortable place to read, thus helping to instill the love for reading that teachers work hard to develop in each child.
