On a typical day, my students are challenged to be active participants in their learning process through individual, partner, small group, and whole group activities.
My school is located in a rural area.
The poverty level is high. Our school system is operating without a levy. Many of the students qualify for free or reduced price lunch. The students are wonderful, motivated students who are willing and anxious to learn. I feel they deserve the same opportunities as other students. They enjoy a variety of instruction and activities. I am just unable to provide them with all the necessary materials for their student interactive notebooks with a very limited budget.
My Project
The state has newly adopted standards (common core). The standards focus on project based learning. A new learning tool being utilized by students is called an interactive notebook. It is a place for students to record class notes, work, and activities. This will be the second year I will be using the notebooks with students. We glue many foldables (graphic organizers) in the notebook. The foldables are used to engage students and help organize their learning experiences. The highlighters, colored pencils, and colored paper are used in creating and making the interactive notebooks individualized, as well as aiding in making the notebook a useful and meaningful learning tool. The printer will be used to print foldables and interactive learning activities, etc. for the notebooks.
The student interactive notebooks will be used to improve student achievement.
This is the second year I will be using them in my classroom. The use of these notebooks has proven effective during the first year, as my overall student achievement levels and academic performance increased. Student organization has improved as well.
