My students need the Parrot Drones to learn with as they are engineering their way through STEM and preparing themselves for careers in STEM related fields.
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) is an initiative that I have incorporated into my Science classroom. I strive to develop students who are critical thinkers and problem solvers while challenging them with technology. I strive to prepare them for future careers in STEM related fields.
Students learn best when their interest in a project leads to their involvement.
It is my job as a classroom teacher to help my students learn. I have always taught with a hands-on approach to learn science concepts. In the words of Benjamin Franklin, “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.” My classes include high school and junior high students that are members of a small rural, farming community. They thrive on hands-on, inquiry science. Using technology in my classroom is one way that I can help prepare my students for careers in STEM related fields such as engineering, physics, computer science and medicine. In our world, technology advances so quickly and being able to give my students the chance to work with the newest technology is difficult within our school budget constraints.
My Project
My students will be able to learn how scientists use robotic systems for aerial photography, remote-sensing, how GPS operates and how to program an UAV to fly. Researching current applications of UAV's will be required. My students will also learn how to be responsible when owning a UAV. They will practice flying the UAV and learn how to maneuver it to gain confidence in flying. During the study on UAV’s, I will provide different opportunities for formative assessments for my students. These will be in the form of informal question and answer sessions, observations during in-class activities and periodically gathering student feedback on specific questions where my students are asked to reflect on their performance. We will have active test flights along the way. Industry is currently trying to fill vacant positions in STEM related fields. I will provide a pathway for my students to enable them to explore a STEM career. An essay and flight test will provide for a summative assessment.
Learning how to use the Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) will excite my students and propel them into situations that result in learning.
UAV's are presently being used in farming communities to check on livestock and crops! My students will learn how scientists use robotic systems in everyday life and how to be responsible when using an UAV. The advantages of using technology, engineering and math in my science classes is to help my students achieve a readiness to put them ahead upon graduation.
