First grade is a magical year where students learn to read and become actual readers. They start first grade knowing just a few words and leave being able read real books. My goal is that my students don't just know how to read books, but also LOVE reading!

My Project
Every day, we have a two hour literacy block. During this block of time, student rotate throughout different literacy centers. Examples of some of the existing centers are: Writing, independent reading, spelling, computer, small group reading instruction with the teacher, etc. I would love to have a small group listening station (hence the funding for this project) where students could select authentic literature from a selection of library favorites audio books. Hearing the books is very important to these students, being that many are English language learners. It is important for them to hear the English language in as many different forms and environments as possible. It will also benefit my students for them to hear the words being pronounced correctly. Having a listening center in my literacy block will help my student with their reading, writing, and speaking improve.
Having CD players and headphones will allow my students to hear and read a variety of books which will help them improve their reading and writing skills.
It will also allow them more opportunities to hear books in English, which will help them with the proper pronunciation of words, fluency, and character voices. Many of my ELL students do not get books read to them at home on a regular basis; this is why it is so important for them to get as much exposure to literature as possible.
