My students need a place that is comfortable for reading (bean bag chair, rug and bench), a place to meet (table and 2 stools) and a spot to sit at reading (5 stools)!
Imagine walking into a room full of primary colors and ABC posters. This is exactly what third graders do not want... YUCK! They are starting to see themselves as the "older group" in the school and would love a classroom that fits their personality. That's what I do. Provide a space that motivates!
I have a group of 18 third graders that come from a rural area.
We have several farms in the area, and most of our population is low income. Most of the students in our school qualify for free or reduced lunch. We also have a large group of students with special needs and have ESL needs.
In the last two years we have closed down two neighborhood schools and decided to put all of the students in one school. This year will be a big change for a lot of kids. I hope to ease them into the year by welcoming them into a classroom that will knocks their socks off!!
My Project
I am in a new classroom this year and since I'm an extra section of third grade, I do not have any supplies or furniture. We are looking in all of the storage closets and sheds to try to piece together a room. I would love to have some nice things that my students can use like a bean bag chair, a rug and a bench. I do not have a rug for my large group area, or many comfy places for them to sit. The students would really think a high table and stools would be a fun to meet and conference daily. All of the items on my wish list are not typical classroom items and that's exactly what I'm going for!!
My students are walking into a new room with a lot of new students from the neighboring school.
I'm going to give them the experience of walking into "the cool room" by making it personalized to how they envision themselves. It'll be the dorm room type classroom that has a cutting edge look. It'll be organized and comfortable so that they aren't worried about using all the left over, scuffed up furniture that I can scrape up. YOU WILL BE HELPING TO MOTIVATE STUDENTS TO WANT TO COME TO SCHOOL!
