This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a Teach for America teacher teaching 20, Pre-K students from a low income community. I have one English Language Learner and one student with a language disability.
Many of my students face the problem of highly limited language in an area where speech therapy and services are scarce. My students are exemplary of the "word gap," which often persists in low-income communities, wherein students simply have fewer words in their vocabulary as compared to their higher-income peers. At the beginning of the year, one of my students had a vocabulary of five words. However, I often hear her singing songs about our academic concepts in the classroom, including songs about counting, patterns, the weather and the alphabet. The same is true of many of my other students. Furthermore, research indicates that young children learn best from music, which I have found to be true of my students.
My students and I need an MP3 player for our classroom. I teach and they learn so much through music. They have short attention spans and I often lose them in the time it takes to change a CD and find the right track. Additionally, they love to "help" and their fingerprints on the Cd's often makes the CD player go crazy, wasting more precious instructional time. An MP3 player would save us so much time and help them learn so much!
Your help will make it possible for my students to learn more readily and increase their vocabulary through fun and practical methods! You will empower my students with a stronger vocabulary through a means that research demonstrates is most powerful for young children.
