Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My kids love video games! Not doubt about that. They stroll in talking about how they went to the neighborhood video store to play (for free) the latest and greatest game available. Now that I know WHAT peaks their interest, a tablet is a way to teach them how to analyze informational text.
I will have 130 8th graders, of which 13 are students with special needs, 23 are on the 'watch' list for a possible learning disability, and about 10 still have not exited the bilingual program.
Our school population is predominantly Latino, serving families of low income and situated on a huge boulevard which is the dividing boundary for two rival gangs. My kids love technology but unfortunately, not all can afford to purchase tablets. Many of my students with special needs hate to read....especially informational text, and anyone who has read about CCSS, that is a must standard kids must be able to master to be successful in both high school and beyond. I don't want my students with special needs to be at a disadvantaged on top of having to work twice as hard as my gen ed kids...having a tablet in their hand will help both them and myself to push reading informational text via a tablet.
My Project
Because I have so many students and because of budget cuts (no new special educators can be hired), being able to download current events, researching to make a claim for their argumentative piece, and reading informational text via ebooks/magazines to analyze, evaluate, and synthesize will make me be able to differentiate the learning of my students with special needs by providing them with the technology they so love as well as have the flexibility for them to move around the room and/or download materials modified for their needs.
I am preparing my kids to be successful in both high school and college; I don't want them to fail and be drop-outs because they can't handle defending a claim, not being able to read a report for information, or how to cite textual evidence, or how to defend a position - all the skills and standards listed under Common Core.
My students with special needs learn differently, and I must find the means to reach them...a tablet is a way to get them to embrace reading informational text.
