As a K-2 reading teacher, my goal is to encourage my students to love reading. Each day my students meet with me to work on reading skills, as well as participating in literacy centers including technology, writing, word work, listening center and read to self. It's a busy place full of learning!
Many of my students come from homes where they don't have access to lots of books.
Many come to school without having someone read to them at home on a regular basis. They are eager to learn and soak up new information like sponges. One of the most rewarding parts of my job is seeing students grow in confidence as they learn.
My Project
As I mentioned above, one of the literacy centers is the listening center. It is a favorite center for all of my students. They love to listen to familiar stories over and over. Being able to listen to a book that they can follow along with, but not be able to read independently allows them to hear the book being read fluently. Over the years I have bought and collected many books on CD, but I no longer have devices for the students to be able to listen to the books. The CD players and headphones would allow up to five of my students to be in the listening center hearing good literature being read to them.
By donating to this project, you are helping to build a solid literacy foundation that will follow the students throughout their school careers and lives.
I know that my love of reading began at an early age and I want that for my students, as well.
