This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Last year we began teaching the Engage New York math program in our classroom. Students were able to deepen their understanding of place value, multiplication, division, fractions and decimals using the concepts taught through this program. This year all math will be taught using Engage New York.
My fourth grade students are a group of bright, energetic kids who take control of their own learning.
They love to ask questions and work collaboratively to discover the answers. The majority of my students receive free or reduced-price lunch and many of my students are English Language Learners. They come to school every day energized and ready to take advantage of all opportunities. At our school we work collaboratively to ensure all students have an opportunity to grow and learn.
My Project
These place value coins will be beneficial to my students on a daily basis, as my students will be using them to deepen their understanding of place value, multiplication, division and decimals. Place value coins will teach my students that each place value is 10 times more than the previous place value. My students will use them to manipulate place values by composing and decomposing numbers, using them to change values by adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing within each place value. It provides a visual representation of place value and allows my students another way to engage with the material.
This project will be make a difference in the daily lives of my students.
They will have the hands-on materials to help strengthen their understanding of place value. The visual representations will be beneficial to my English Language Learners as they can physically see how one place value is 10 times more than the previous place value. These place value coins will provide support for our Engage New York math curriculum.
