As newspapers have gone online, reporters have become bloggers and news has become a 24-7 operation, we continue to operate primarily in the world of print, publishing content every three weeks in a newspaper, a format some say is dying.

I teach high school (grades 9-12) journalism, which includes an introductory class, photojournalism, broadcasting, newspaper and yearbook. We are a school of approximately 1,000 located 30 minutes from a large, metropolitan area in Kansas. Of the students in our district, nearly 50 percent qualify for free or reduced lunches. We have recently launched an online version of our print newspaper. Currently, the content in the two publications is identical. The students have expressed interest in including original content (stories, photos, sound clips from interviews and/or video files), but our equipment is limiting our ability to expand into some of these areas. Although we have a broadcasting program in name, the enrollment has been limited, primarily because our equipment (or lack of) has caused so much frustration for the students who have been enrolled.

We have two freshmen who are interested in taking the broadcasting course next year, a schedule that allows for our print students and our broadcasting students to meet the same hour, allowing for collaboration and convergence, and students who love the opportunity to listen to their iPods whenever given the privilege. This is the ideal time to find equipment that will allow us to explore podcasting and expand into areas of new media. To get started, we are in need of digital voice recorders and headphones. Our students are already conducting interviews, so voice recorders will allow them to capture this sound and edit for upload to our newspaper’s online site. Because our computers do not have speakers, we also need headphones to be able to edit sound.

Your help will make it possible for high school students to understand and use new media. This will be beneficial to students who are aspiring journalists, but it will also benefit all students, as they will be better equipped to become responsible, life long consumers of the news.
