I teach Freshman English. My students are mostly middle class, but we have a growing population of minority and economically disadvantaged students.
Our school has recently adopted the SLC Freshman Academy model in order to help students make a stronger connection to high school, improve their classroom performance, learn how to set and achieve goals, and foster a successful transition year so that our students do not drop-out at the alarming number they do now.
We have a structure to help foster student connections to school, now we need to build relevance into the curriculum by connecting classic literature to history and how it influences modern society.
Unfortunately all of our school resources have gone into trying to lower class sizes and there are no more funds for books, and frankly, many of our students can't afford the $10 book that we need.
We have planned an integrated unit between English and Social studies using the novel Animal Farm to teach about satire, the Russian Revolution and propaganda. Students will have the opportunity to choose a character from Animal Farm to run for President. By examining the use of propaganda in the novel and in modern political commercials, students will use a selected type of propaganda to create a slogan and commercial campaign (using MovieMaker).
This activity will help our students become critical thinkers and more savvy consumers of information. They will apply their knowledge and skills across the curriculum and discover the relevance of literature and history to modern society.
Please help my students by funding the cost of a class set of Animal Farm novels. You will be helping a new generation become critical consumers of information and help them see the relevance of their education to their lives!
