The Science in Science Fiction; English/Science Project

My students need 50 copies of "The Songs of Distant Earth" by Arthur C. Clark.

Mr. H. Joseph Nicollet Middle School
Burnsville, MN Grades 9-12

"And then, by one of history's greatest ironies, Mankind was given the keys to the Universe-and barely a century in which to use them." The Songs of Distant Earth by Arthur C. Clark. I teach 9th grade Earth Science. Our school is the most diverse in the area and we do not have accelerated or low level science courses as a result the students in my classes have a wide range of abilities and backgrounds so I provide a multiple learning approach within the classroom to meet the needs of all my students.

Astronomy is one of the topics we cover in science. The subject is a high interest topic for many of my students. Some comprehension of the incredible magnitude and scale of the universe is crucial to understanding astronomy but these concepts are very abstract and hard for students to envision. My students have different backgrounds, abilities and interests as a result the levels of understanding and connections they make in astronomy differ and are sometimes limited. Having my students read science fiction will enhance their interest in astronomy opening up their minds, creating images and possibilities about the universe they may never have thought of on their own. These new ideas will be discussed in class and in small groups leading to further questions and more interest in astronomy. I plan to use three different science fiction books in conjunction with their English classes. The science fiction book a student reads will be based in part by their reading level. The student's English class will concentrate on the literature itself while in science we will concentrate on the science in the book.

By developing a unit with the English and science department, students will benefit from the combined effort of an English and science teacher. As teachers we will work together helping students understand the essential information required by both subjects. Students will learn more because they will see the connections between the subjects. Having different science books for students of different reading levels will help to ensure that all students are learning. Our school is providing some of the funding for this project by buying most of the required books. The resource we need is a science fiction book called The Songs of Distant Earth by Arthur C. Clark this book will be used for students with a high reading ability.

I have been developing this idea for several years using excerpts from science fiction movies, short stories and novels. The students always seem very interested and ask a lot of questions. Now I would like to take it a step further by working with the English department and require my students to read a complete novel. In science the students will use what they have been learning in astronomy to discuss the book and talk about how the information in the book compares to what scientists presently understand about the universe and how the story might be different if the science in the book differs from our actual understanding of science.
