My Students

The novel "Wonder" tells about a boy who is different. By the end of the book, I would like for my students to understand and have tolerance for people who are not like them.

My students are 5th graders in a rural location in West Virginia.

Many of them come from a low socioeconomic background. Many of the students do not have Internet access at home let alone access to novels to read at home. Our school houses about 600 students.

My Project

Throughout reading the novel "Wonder" by R.J. Palacio, they will learn to be more accepting and tolerant of other people who are different. They will learn how to sympathize and show empathy towards others. They will also learn literacy skills needed in 5th grade.

Donations to this project will greatly improve my classroom by adding to the experience of what it is like to complete a novel.

Many of these students have never finished an entire book before. This will give them a sense of accomplishment.
