My Students

"I love music passionately. And because I love it I try to free it from barren traditions that stifle it." ~Claude Debussy~ I want my students to learn and experience playing on instruments from different cultures. Many of them will never have the opportunity to play music of other cultures.

My students love music.

Many of them have told me how much they look forward to music. The students at MMS work hard and are very family oriented. We look out for each other and always strive to help each other. The school is in a rural area and does not have a lot of funding. I have a vision to see the community and the school come together through music. I would like to start several music ensembles and perform concerts that would involve the community. All ideas have to start small and with a little bit of time and care will blossom into something a lot larger than what most would expect.

My Project

Currently, my students play my personally owned African drums. They take turns playing them because I only own 4 drums and a couple shakers. They enjoy playing them more than any other instruments in the class. By adding more African drums to my classroom I will be able to have more students get involved at a quicker rate. It is my goal to be able to have 1 drum for each student in my classes. With these instruments my students will have the opportunity to play on actual African drums and I would eventually like to start up an African Drumming ensemble.

These donations will provide my students with instruments and lessons that they many never get to experience without them.

I want my students to be able to take the information that they have learned to their homes and share it with their families. I want the students to see how the community can be brought together through music. I also want to teach my students that by using donations it is always good to give back. I would like for my classes to choose a project for them to help out as well.
