Literacy For Inner City Students

My students need 60 copies of "A Child Called It" by David Pelzer and a subscription to Current Events.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Every so often I come across a book that the students are actually interested in reading. As teachers, it is difficult to obtain high interest books such as "A Child Called It." It is very costly to buy a class set for my students. We cannot ask the parents to buy the books. Unfortunately, with budget cuts and our city being in a recession, it is not possible for the school to order to the books either. All of the students are very interested in reading this book and it would be wonderful if I can get a class set for both of my classes. These children would greatly appreciate the books. I would create literature circles which would greatly enhance their reading skills. This is a type of activity where students read the same part of the book per day, and after they discuss what they've read. They also have certain jobs, where each student would have to present to the rest of the class.

I began reading a few pages of the book to them out loud, and they didn't want me to stop reading. I had a few copies and one student even took it home because she couldn't get enough of it. This particular student also told me that she hated reading until she read this book. She didn't know how interesting the story would be and that it came alive. She also told me that she would like to read other books written by Dave Pelzer. He has a trilogy, "A Child Called It," "The Lost Boy," and "A Man Named Dave." I would love to have my class read all three books. That would be a dream come true, but for now we would like to start with the first book. This would spark the children's' interest in reading so much that they would go to great lengths to get more books like this one. Reading is empowerment. Knowledge is power. Let's empower these children and give them a chance to make reading enjoyable.

If I could get my class these books, we could have literature circles and discuss certain literary elements. I believe that if I can get the books now, it would prepare them better for the upcoming ELA exam in January.

Some children take their resources for granted in other states. However, in New York City in this high poverty school that is not the case. Our children need the same resources other children get. So why not give these students a chance at reading a book they want to read? Your help will be greatly appreciated.
