"My children deserve a fighting chance. I am a sixth grade teacher in a very high need, low income neighborhood. Our school is a beacon of light in a community that is constantly rocked by drugs and gang violence.

My children face many obstacles everyday in their home lives and one obstacle that I don't think they should ever have to face is the lack of educational supplies that will help improve their lives and the great futures they could have.

The supplies that I am requesting are a class set of Harry Potter books, as well as the story on CD, to help with fluency. I am also requesting a set of guided reading books for small group instruction.

One of the biggest interventions that a teacher can use to strengthen reading skills is guided reading. I am committed to doing small guided reading group instruction everyday, but my school does not really have any materials. The only books that we do have are way below the grade level that my students are reading on. It is so hard to get them where they need to be without the proper materials.

I believe that every child is entitled to a promising future, regardless of where they come from. I want to give my children everything they need, including the love of learning to inspire them to make something of themselves and their lives. This project will benefit my students because I want them to see the importance of reading and where it could take them.

With your help, I can provide my students with a wonderful education and a love of learning that will result in them striving to do their best to succeed in life regardless of the situations that they are coming from.

My students need 30 paperback copies of "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone", one copy on CD, as well as a set of Literature Unit Activities. The cost of this proposal is $738, which includes shipping for any materials requested and fulfillment ?."

Dear Lear, MaryLou, Barack , Bonnie , Michael and Linda,
Thank you so much for funding my grant proposal. I am so excited about receiving these materials and I know that having them in my classroom is going to make such a difference. I can't wait to go to school tomorrow to tell my children that our grant got funded. They appreciate everything that is given to them and I know that they are going to go crazy when they hear about this. Thank you for helping to make the lives better for the amazing children at R.R. Wright Elementary School and my classroom.

On Apr 28, 2008, Ms. C. followed this note with student letters sent via mail to the donor who completed this project, and to donors who gave $100 or more.
