Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Six years ago I chose to become an art teacher to help children learn to express themselves and to give them opportunities to explore with art materials and to create as if their life depended on it. I teach elementary art, grades k-5, in a high ESL populated school. Many of our students are new to the country and have not had formal art experiences.
Children have an innate sense and need to create. It is how they make sense of their surroundings, their thoughts, and their values. Art is where this can happen daily for them. But many of my students are on free and reduced lunch and money is often an issue in their homes and at our school. They come to school and in that time is the only chance they have to be exposed to art.
My students love art. They often do not have prior experience in creating and so a whole new world is opened up to them. But we are a school without a lot of money and so I have to make do with very limited materials. I remember growing up and doing printmaking in my school and deciding then that I would be an artist and now I am. I want my students to have that same opportunity to learn a new art medium, if not even learn a possible new trade.
In art I try to integrate the fourth grade social studies curriculum into what we are doing. Each year we discuss the different regions in NC and what each landscape is like. Then I ask the students to think about if they could live in any region in NC, where would they live? They then write about which region and describe why they would want to live there. They then create a collograph, which is basically a collage, out of different textured materials of the region they chose. After they are finished with their collographs we print them. My students need a printing press to be able to make a print from their collographs. Since I have no printing press we have to use a hand held brayer, which just does not print well. It is really frustrating when the students have worked so hard on their collographs and they don't print well because we do not have a press.
Your help will ensure that my students have the chance to explore their own voice through a different art medium. Your help will ensure that they will have the same experiences in art that other students do at more affluent schools. Your help will ensure that my students will have a chance to create an artwork that helps them explore and express their own ideas, thoughts, and feelings.
