"Math Manipulative Mania ~ Mathematicians in the Making

I am currently teaching a class of 25 first graders in a public school. These children are in great need of opportunities that go above and beyond the "normal" classroom experiences. Their education is truly a sum of their activities at school.

This is my first year at this school although I have been teaching for more than fifteen years. I often feel like Old Mother Hubbard because when I go to my math cupboards, they are bare. Outside of math books, I have a hodge-podge of hands-on materials for the children to use. It causes me a lot of frustration because I know a math environment rich in manipulatives is the best way to teach young children the different skills and concepts needed to be successful in math.

In order to create a "Math Manipulative Mania" in my classroom I need your help in filling my bare cupboards with pattern blocks, unifix cubes, colored tiles, tangrams, counting bears, Judy clocks and colored links so I don't have to worry about my children's math development any longer.

Your help with this project will give every child in my classroom an opportunity to develop their math skills in a way in which makes sense to them and is developmentally appropriate. Your involvement will help to ensure that they develop a strong mathematical foundation that will carry them into the future.

My students need a variety of 7 math manipulatives including pattern blocks, unifix cubes, colored tiles, tangrams, counting bears, judy clocks and colored links. The cost of this proposal is $528, which includes shipping for any materials requested and fulfillment ?."

Dear Richard Spencer, Stacie and Anonymous Donor,
Wow! I just turned on my computer and found out that my "Math Manipulative Mania" has been funded in its entirety. Thank you for helping to fill "Old Mother Hubbard's" cupboard with loads of exciting math manipulatives. Your generosity will help to provide my students with a hands-on approach to developing their mathematical understanding. I am so excited. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

On May 12, 2008, Mrs. S. followed this note with student letters sent via mail to the donor who completed this project, and to donors who gave $100 or more.
