Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a kindergarten teacher. After teaching preschool for twelve years, this is my first year teaching kindergarten. There are thirty students in my classroom and I hope to inspire within my students a love for reading. I entitled my project, "Bringing Books to Life", because I know there are many ways to make reading meaningful and exciting for children. One way is to encourage the children to role-play stories through dramatic play and puppetry.

I read to my students daily and they enjoy "story time". Recently, we acted out a story about diversity using stick puppets each student created. After we practiced in the classroom, we went to another kindergarten room to perform the puppet show. I noticed how enthusiastic the students became about the story while performing in the puppet show. This activity helped my students enhance skills including language development, recalling story events, and retelling a story in their own words. This activity brought the story "to life", making the words on the printed page have meaning. They talked about the activity for days and expressed a desire to act out other stories.

Everyday the students have time to discover, create and explore in the various centers in the classroom. A few of the centers include a reading corner, dramatic play area (e.g. toy kitchen) and a writing table. During "center time" the students have the opportunity to retell stories read in class. The students are very creative with art materials and have made puppets using paper and craft sticks. I know it would be a wonderful, educational experience for the students to retell and create stories in a puppet theater. The students would also enjoy new dress-up clothes for dramatic play and a place to organize the clothing.

My students are eager to learn and I know they will thoroughly enjoy this project. Your help will ensure my students have the opportunity to "Bring Books to Life" through dramatic play and puppetry. When I see my students smile, create and role play using the materials through this project, I will remember the generous support of some very special people.
