"Education is often a "numbers game", but more often than not the numbers are not favorable! Each year, more than half of the students in my 1st grade class are not able to reach benchmark for reading! This means that I need to find additional ways to promote literacy in ALL academic content areas.
Research shows that the rich variety of material offered by children's literature stimulates the learners' engagement, thus promoting literacy. In addition, it promotes critical thinking skills in the context of Science and Social Studies curriculum.
Help me to enrich the lives of my students by helping them learn through literature. I have selected over 30 of the best picture books to illuminate the wonders of our natural world and spark a curiosity for reading and learning that will burn for years to come.
I am looking for a donor who understands that children's literature extends far beyond amusement, but reaches deep into the soul of a lifelong learner. I want to give my students the future they deserve. The power of giving starts with you!
My project needs over 30 picture books to enhance my students' understanding during Science and Social Studies instruction.
The cost of this proposal is $468, which includes shipping for any materials requested and fulfillment ."
Mrs. V. sent this note after the project was fully funded:

Dear Mark, Suzanne, Erin, Angela , Olivia and Veronica,
You have made a classroom full of kids so happy! Students will giggle when they read about silly science questions and answers. The will marvel at the different animals that live in a savanna. And, they will eagerly check their growth throughout the year on the growth chart. Mostly, we will use the resources you have provided to build their love of reading. Thank you!
On Dec 10, 2008, Mrs. V. followed this note with student letters sent via mail to the donor who completed this project, and to donors who gave $100 or more.
Great news -- this project is now a reality! We ordered the materials and they were sent directly to the classroom.

"Books are so important in my life!
And I know how important reading is for the education of students and for lifelong learning....reading in print and the net. An educator for many years, I know books must be magnetic for the students to want to read. I love knowing I can improve their reading materials! www.suzanneholman.com
